Significant Snow Forecasted for Tahoe

Look like winter is not quite over yet in the Sierra ... NOAA is currently forecasting a "significant snow event" that could drop over 2 feet of snow in the higher elevations starting this coming Thursday. This may provide Go West Foto with an opportunity to shoot snowboarding and skiing in the backcountry later than expected. More importantly, it may also provide some much needed drought relief for California and Nevada. The snowpack in the Sierra is currently being measured at about 30% of average.

From NOAA:

LONG TERM…THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY… MODELS REMAIN IN GOOD AGREEMENT WITH TROUGH REACHING THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST ON THURSDAY THEN DROPPING SOUTH ACROSS THE SIERRA AND WESTERN NEVADA FRIDAY AND FRIDAY NIGHT.

A SECOND SYSTEM IS POSSIBLE SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY, WITH HIGH PRESSURE RETURNING TO THE WEST FOR MONDAY AND TUESDAY.

JET WILL PUSH INTO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA FRIDAY MORNING, WITH THE STRONGEST PART OF THE SYSTEM REACHING THE SIERRA FRIDAY AFTERNOON TO EARLY SATURDAY MORNING. SNOW LEVELS ON TRACK TO FALL BELOW 7000 FEET FRIDAY AFTERNOON AND AS LOW AS 5500-6000 FEET FOR EARLY SATURDAY MORNING.

THIS WILL BRING THE POTENTIAL FOR ACCUMULATING SNOW OVER THE SIERRA PASSES. HIGH END LIQUID AMOUNTS FOR FRIDAY TO EARLY SATURDAY MORNING REMAIN AT 1-2 INCHES ALONG THE SIERRA CREST AND NEAR 0.75 AROUND THE TAHOE BASIN.

POTENTIAL REMAINS FOR A SIGNIFICANT SNOW EVENT ABOVE 7000 FEET IN THE SIERRA BY LATE APRIL STANDARDS.

Featured Locations:  Waterhouse Peak, California Chutes (Kirkwood Sidecountry), Rubicon Peak (West Shore).

Filmed and edited by David N. Braun. Soundtrack created by David N. Braun using royalty free loops in Garageband software.
